IS IT EMBARASSING TO SAY I DIDN’T DISCOVER THE EASTERN SIDE OF THIS STATE UNTIL I WAS A GROWN ADULT?

Turns out, I married someone who’s family moved here from over the mountains, so I knew there was bound to be a lot of Eastern Washing- ton travels in my life.

When I say I hadn’t discovered it, I really mean it. I had only been to the Eastern side of the mountains maybe 4 or 5 times at the age of 27. The only time I remember going as a kid, I was riding in the back of a car with no air condition- ing and probably sleeping the entire time as we passed through on our way to Montana. I can only recall the feeling of waking up, overheated, sweaty and afraid to touch the metal buckle for fear of being burned.

Now I love it. It is required travel every year if not more than once per year. The sprawling hills and fields really sucked me in. Whenever we make our way over, we always make a stop in Yakima! It is not to be overlooked, with so many lovely places to enjoy. A few favorites:

Cowiche Canyon Restaurant: Delicious food and drinks and beautifully designed interiors in the heart of downtown.

Bale Breaker Brewery: Placed in the hop fields, it’s such an amazing sight to take in while you’re sipping on a drink and snacking on food truck fare. The outdoor space is great for kids too!

Mighty Tieton Gallery: I love a good art gallery. This surprising little spot is in the tiniest of towns. We happened upon it during a summer festival one year and I can’t wait to return.

Yakima Farmer’s Market: Obviously I love a farmer’s market! And the Yakima Market was full of wonderful vendors and activities for kids.

Bill’s Berry Farm: You Pick fruits all summer long along with festival atmosphere. Fun for everyone!
